MĀLAMA HONUA: TO CARE FOR THE EARTH

A Maui Digital Bus Virtual & Hybrid Project:

For GRADES 6RD - 9TH

Objective

Students will explore the topic of global change and marine debris by investigating the history of plastics, the harmful effects of pollution, and possible solutions to the issues. Scheduled live video chats or in-person sessions will engage students in discussions and serve as a platform for questions.

Summary

The Earth is changing, quickly; and humans are the main reason for these changes. It has changed so much that scientists are discussing a new geologic epoch: the Anthropocene. The interdisciplinary topic that covers this is called Global Change. It is an incredibly complicated topic covering dozens of fields. In this project, we’ll look

specifically at how plastics have changed the world, for better and for worse. We’ll cover what happens once plastic (and other waste) is discarded, and what solutions must be implemented to solve these problems. Students will explore and determine what it takes to become good stewards of the planet.
